What is Phototherapy?

Phototherapy is the use of a certain bandwith/wavelength of light for therapeutic purposes.

Narrowband UVB Light Therapy (NB-UVB)

A UVB narrowband lamp emits safe light energy.

Narrowband UVB lights (NB-UVB) comprises a subset of the UVB spectrum centered at roughly 311 nm. This is less than 1% of total range of wavelengths from sunlight.

Studies have shown that:

  • Narrow band UVB light treatment uses the optimal part of the UVB light spectrum which slows growth of psoriasis lesions or re-pigmentation of one’s natural skin coloring.
  • Exposure time of narrowband UVB lamps can be longer than with traditional broadband UVB yielding more effective results. Recent studies have shown 75% clearing (PASI 75) with narrowband UVB.
  • Erythemal response (similar to sunburn) is nearly eliminated with narrowband UVB light.
  • Risks and side effects of other treatments such as systemic drugs have not been found with narrowband UVB light therapy.

NB-UVB therapeutic advantages for your skin condition

  • Psoriasis – Narrowband UVB light treatment provide faster clearing, less sun burning, and more complete disease resolution than traditional UVB and is safer than biologics.
  • Vitiligo – Narrowband UVB lights are proving to be very useful in the treatment of Vitiligo. Narrowband UVB light treatment is replacing traditional PUVA phototherapy treatment where one had to take a pill along with being exposed to a certain band of ultraviolet liht. It is important to know that UVB narrowband lamps for vitiligo and for psoriasis or eczema require no photo-sensitizing agents. In terms of full disclosure, one should know that most insurance plans do not cover light therapy for vitiligo because they consider vitiligo a cosmetic disease and are not willing to pay for what they believe is a cosmetic condition.
  • The treatments in the office only take a very few minutes with these advanced bulbs.
  • Biologic Therapy for Psoriasis

  • Biologic Drugs for Psoriasis -Biologic drugs refer to a class of medication that is on the leading edge of medical therapy. Generally it involves the patient or the doctor giving injections at periodic intervals. Not all patients are candidates for this treatment, but for those who are, it may be a god-send. Many patients will find that no other treatment has been as successful as Biologic Therapy. The negative side is that there is a battery of tests one must go through to make sure they are candidates and additionally, their insurance company must approve the treatment since, generally it is too expensive for patients to afford without their insurance. (Sometimes, we can coax the pharmaceutical company to provide this costly medication.) Also, there are numerous potential side effects, although most of the times, patients do not report many side effects at all. If you think you are interested in this course of treatment, I would suggest you read up on it (Look up Humira, Enbrel, and Stelara for a good start), then come in for a consultation.
